The Epic Saga of The Master of Whitehall continues with book two, Lexi’s Legacy. The story opens and resumes about a year after the ending of the first book with a Christmas celebration at Whitehall Manor. The story is told from Lexi’s point of view and is set in both Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia.
Lexi begins her story by recalling her life then recounts how she was devastated, only a month after her twenty-second birthday, by a diagnosis of terminal cancer. She faces having only weeks left to live. With tears of fear and sadness at the future, she visits Katelyn at Whitehall to tell her best friend ‘good-bye’. When she arrives there she discovers an unexpected cure from an unlikely source. Lexi discovers the existence of an entirely new life and is shocked beyond belief by Katelyn’s revelations to her of ‘The Gift’. Katelyn describes a life that is free of sickness and death; one that can be hers simply for the asking. Her only option being death and an early grave, Lexi embraces ‘The Gift’ and begins her journey into immortality.
Lexi relates her experiences as Katelyn gently leads her to the change, turning her from mortal to immortal. She describes in detail the changes that take place in her body as she enters a supernatural world she never knew existed. Lexi easily slips into the life of an immortal and two best friends now become eternal friends. When she wakes from the change, she joins Katelyn and James at Whitehall Plantation, embraced in love as the youngest member of a supernatural family.
Lexi narrates her tale of life; lost and suddenly found again. She describes what it is like to leave one life behind and looks forward to another. She tells the fear and uncertainty, as she steps out to begin a completely new journey into an immortal life. Lexi knows that she has much to learn about her new world as she enters into the life of a fledgling vampire. She quickly begins to discover and develop untold powers that were latent in her human life. The life of the Immortal becomes stronger in her as she tells of her first hunt, the sadness of attending her own funeral, and her beginning search for devotion, for and from, a mate in her new world.
Lexi invites you to join her now, as she leads you on an adventure of life changing proportions … an adventure with many unexpected twists and turns … an adventure of growth and maturity into the life of a vampire … an adventure of love.
This is the second story in The Master of Whitehall series. I really enjoyed it!
Alexis (Lexi) Gordon is Katelyn's friend at college. She is a wonderful character. She is funny, sweet and a little naive. But, when her life is turned upside down, she accepts her friend's offer to become immortal. This is her story.
Having read the first story, I was looking forward to reading this one. I started to read the story and, although it mirrored some of the scenes from the previous book, it was interesting to see them through Lexi's eyes. Becoming a vampire actually suits Lexi. She gains more confidence in her abilities, but she is still young and impetuous. The story is told mostly through Lexi's point of view, but Katelyn and a new character, Gale, has their say too. Gale is an intriguing character, who is a 1600 year old vampire. She is one of the "Old One's" and is extremely powerful. Gale comes into Lexi's life after a distressing event that, because of Lexi's vampire youth, she is not able to cope with. The story has many twists, but I did find some of the dialogue to be still a little gushy at times. However, it was intriguing to see how Lexi's experiences have shaped her, and made her grow emotionally. I was a little surprised at how she dealt with Mikey, after their relationship ended badly. I certainly wouldn't want to be on Lexi's bad side; she's a woman scorned, and that's all I'm going to say! The story is not full of action, nor is it a romance novel, although there is a bit both, but it is more of a journey of self discovery and emotional growth. The story does not end on a cliffhanger, but I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as soon as possible.
Rick Veal has written an intriguing story of love, friendship and emotional growth. His characters are lifelike and likable. His writing style is not as fast paced compared to other authors I have read, but the story was written in such a way that I couldn't not keep turning the pages. The flow of the story was wonderful.
There are some scenes of a sensual nature that are a little on the hot side (although not as explicit as some books I have read), so I do not recommend this book for younger readers. I do, however, recommend this book if you love paranormal romances with sexy vampires. - Lynn Worton
