Willow Pond

Willow Pond - Carol Tibaldi I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review. This book is fantastic! Set in the late 1920's and early 1930's, it brings this period of time to life. Laura Kingsley Austin is a fantastic character. She has spunk and determination. When her son is kidnapped, she is devastated but determined to find him.Virginia Kingsley is the boss at a speakeasy during the prohibition. She is also a fantastic character. She has a ruthless streak that would put some men to shame. Having said that, she is a loving Aunt. And when her nephew goes missing, she takes it upon herself to investigate. This book swept me away to the time of Al Capone and the beginnings of the illicit trade in booze during the Great Depression. It is a bittersweet tale of loss and love that captured me from the first page. This story is told from many different perspectives and slightly different timelines. This doesn't hurt the story at all; in fact it enhances it. It flowed like a movie in my mind. I could easily see all the characters and places. The descriptions of them are very well described and made them real. As I was reading, I was reminded of a movie I saw starring Angelina Jolie about a similar subject. Although it was similar, they were in no way the same. Carol Tibaldi has written a fantastic story that is difficult to categorize, as there are so many different elements mixed in. There is a mystery, a love story, a detective story and a thriller all rolled into one delicious package. This book is for older readers, but that doesn't mean that those of the older YA age group (16+) cannot enjoy it too. There is some scenes of a sensual nature, but they are not explicit. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for an alternative to all the paranormal stories and other genres out there that are flooding the market at the moment. - Lynn Worton (WaAR)
