The Claiming Words

The Claiming Words - Tricia Drammeh I was given a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review. This is a YA romance novel that gripped me from the first page. It is told from Alisa and Rachel's points of view.Alisa Cole is a sweet character, but she has no friends thanks to her scheming and manipulative cousin, Becky. Although she is seen as the social pariah at the school, she still manages to stay true to herself, and I have the utmost respect for her because of it. She also has an inner strength that few people suspect. Her rescue of Jace solidifies their friendship when he is attacked by a hunter.Jace Alexander is the new kid in school. He has a secret. He's a witch. In fact, the whole family are witches. I actually found his character to be quite immature. I know boys take longer to mature than girls, but the whining annoyed me.Rachel is one of the popular kids. She's on the cheerleading squad, and is one of Alisa's cousin's friends. However, something happens, and she see's how shallow and petty Becky is and decides to warn Alicia. She also finds out something extraordinary is happening to her. This is a fantastic book, which is full of teenage angst. I loved the story, but felt the emotional drama was overwhelming the plot slightly. Don't get me wrong, teen drama is what life is all about. However, I found that there was more focus on the actual emotional drama than on the danger faced by the teens, and Rachel in particular. I loved the romance, and the slight love triangle that occurs. But I also loved the inclusion of Jace's older brother, Bryce. I would have loved to seen more of him, but I understand why I couldn't. I'm hoping that he has a larger part in the next book. Tricia Drammeh has written a wonderful YA romance that captures the teenage angst so well. I recommend this book if you are looking for a YA romance full of danger and excitement. - Lynn Worton (WaAR)
